Weather Alert: Tropical wave dumps buckets of rain on Lesser Antilles
Tropical waves are affecting the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.
From Friday, July 26, a tropical wave was moving into the tropical Atlantic Ocean waters and is predicted to move across the Lesser Antilles on Sunday. But from today and tonight, Saturday, July 27, fresh to strong winds, and rain showers associated with this tropical wave will be affecting mainly the Windward Islands.
This from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Florida.
Additionally, the NHC reported that there is a middle level to upper-level trough cutting across the Caribbean Sea, from the northeastern corner of the area into the southwestern corner of the area. Predicted are scattered moderate to isolated strong rain showers in the coastal plains and coastal waters of Nicaragua from 11N to 13N between 81W and 85W.
A tropical wave also is along 84W/85W from 20N southward.
The wind speeds are forecast to pulse to near gale-force at night, along the coast of Colombia and in the Gulf of Venezuela, from last night, Friday, July 26, through Sunday night.
Barbados Flash Flood Watch
The Barbados Meteorological Service (Met Office) has issued a flash flood watch for parts of the island.
At 5:30 pm, the Watch was put in place.
Barbados is under the Watch due to a strong tropical wave in combination with the ITCZ which are forecast to generate pockets of moderate to heavy showers, periods of rain, scattered thunderstorms and occasional gusty winds across Barbados and the Windward Islands tonight and continuing into tomorrow, Sunday, July 28, 2019.
Rainfall accumulations of two to four inches are possible over the Watch area. This could result in flash flooding in flood-prone areas.
The Flash Flood Watch is now in effect for Barbados until 6:00 pm tomorrow.
However, the Met Office has advised that “it may become necessary to upgrade this Watch to a Warning at short notice if conditions warrant.”
Residents in flood-prone areas have been cautioned to stay on the alert and take the necessary precautions.
What is a Flash Flood Watch?
Flash Flood Watch means that flooding due to heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than six hours) could result in flooding within the Watch area.
