Three US tourists died at a Bahamas resort after falling ill and another was flown to a hospital in New Providence for treatment.

Health Minister Dr Michael Darville said some hotel guests last Thursday went to a clinic with nausea and vomiting, were treated and then discharged. Three people were later found dead, while a fourth was flown to hospital. “We believe what we are seeing is an isolated case associated in a particular area,” she said, adding that investigators are doing toxicology and blood tests to help determine the cause of the disease. “A lady was seen at the clinic and later flown to New Providence. She is at Princess Margaret Hospital for treatment and we are conducting our investigation as we speak. The team is still here on the island. Some of us are driving back to Nassau. and we would have more information as the days go by and probably over the weekend”, concluded the minister.

Prime Minister’s Office Communications Chief Latrae L. Rahming tweeted that the deaths occurred at Sandals Emerald Bay in Exuma. Acting Prime Minister Chester Cooper said police investigations are ongoing and cause of death is currently unknown. According to a resort guest, a possible cause could be a problem with the air conditioning system that could have caused a toxic refrigerant leak.

Several of the vacationers told NBC News that the had complained about the odor at the resort, which was reported as “similar to insecticide”.

In a statement to the Daily Mail, a Sandals spokesperson said they are cooperating with police’s investigation. The representative did not address inquiries regarding claims over the reportedly faulty a/c unit.

To obtain some answers to the many yet unanswered questions, the results of the toxicological tests are awaited in the next few days.
